Greenpoint’s Waterfront on Edge: Proposed Marina Ignites Debate at Transmitter Park

On a humid Tuesday morning in Greenpoint, the future of WNYC Transmitter Park is at the center of a neighborhood standoff. Two local entrepreneurs have floated a plan to build a marina along the park’s East River edge—a move that could add boat slips and a café to one of North Brooklyn’s few stretches of public green space. The proposal, quietly circulated at a community board meeting last week, has sparked a surge of opinion from longtime residents and newcomers alike.

Transmitter Park, a slender seven-acre patch with a panoramic view of Manhattan, has long served as a backyard for Greenpoint’s dog walkers, families, and picnickers. On summer evenings like this week’s, the park is packed with locals escaping the heat, their blankets and coolers spread across the grass. The idea of introducing a marina—complete with increased boat traffic and private events—has left some neighbors worried about losing their oasis to commercial interests.

“We’re already seeing so much change, so fast,” said Marta Kowalski, who’s lived on Greenpoint Avenue for over two decades.
