Made in NYC
Celebrating New York City’s makers, artists, designers, and the communities that create the city’s culture.
New York City does not have a culture problem. It has a coverage problem. The makers are here — the ceramicists in Industry City, the fashion designers in Sunset Park workshops, the muralists reclaiming walls in the South Bronx, the experimental theater companies doing six-show runs in basements in Ridgewood. The artists, musicians, dancers, and craftspeople who make New York City the most culturally alive place in the country are everywhere. The journalism that takes them seriously is rarer than it should be.
Made in NYC was founded in 2024 to fill that gap. We cover the full spectrum of New York’s creative life — from Broadway opening nights to underground gallery shows, from the fashion designers showing at NYFW to the seamstresses whose labor makes the clothes possible. We write about culture as something that is made by people, not just consumed by them, and we cover the economic and social conditions that allow creativity to survive and thrive (or fail to) in one of the world’s most expensive cities.
