As part of Mayor’s Vision Zero initiative and urban livability efforts, New York City is expanding car-free pedestrian plazas across all five boroughs. Areas such as Times Square, Herald Square, and new locations in Queens and the Bronx have been reimagined with widened walkways, seating, greenery, and public art.

These plazas have transformed formerly congested streets into vibrant community spaces that prioritize foot traffic, outdoor dining, and social interaction. Surveys conducted by the Department of Transportation show increased pedestrian satisfaction and business revenue in plazas compared to previous street configurations.

The city plans to pilot more plazas in neighborhoods with high pedestrian activity, reinforcing New York’s commitment to safer, more sustainable, and human-centered urban environments.
