The New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building has unveiled a groundbreaking virtual reality (VR) exhibit that chronicles the architectural transformation of New York City from the 1600s to today. Titled ‘Shaping the Skyline,’ the immersive experience allows visitors to walk through historical reconstructions and future projections of iconic landmarks.

Developed in partnership with Columbia University’s Urban Design Lab, the exhibit highlights pivotal moments such as the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, the rise of the Art Deco Chrysler Building, and the emergence of modern skyscrapers in Hudson Yards. Users can explore digitized renderings and archival materials while engaging with interactive narratives.

Library officials hope the VR exhibit will deepen public appreciation for the city’s built environment and inspire conversations about sustainable urban growth. The installation, free with library admission, runs through December and includes special workshops on digital humanities and urban planning.
